Look at the trees
Breath in the air
Hear nature calling
But don't only stare
Search for something deeper
Find inspiration

Michael from The Trendy Dwarf awarded me with my first award- The Happy Award! Check out his blog! Thank you so much!!

Well for this award I am supposed to post ten things that make me happy. So many things make me happy but for the sake of not boring you, I will stick to the ten.

1. Blogging
Blogging is my favorite thing in the world right now, I LOVE blogging. Blogging makes me feel as if my writing is very important. I love the feeling when I know people actually care what I'm writing about.

2. Books
Without books I would be so bored. I try to squeeze them in any time I can.

3. Music
Music is my relaxer. I will always be listening to something. If I am not listening to something then I am singing. American Idol, here I come! (Yeah, right.)

4. Family
I love my family.

5. Fashion
I do enjoy fashion a lot. My favorite website for fashion currently is lookbook.nu. I try to look my best everywhere I go. My style mostly consists of extremely bright colors- like neons. I like being the sunshine of everyone's day.

6. Piano
Playing the piano is entertaining. I love learning new songs with my piano instructor.

7. Learning
As weird as this sounds, I love learning new things.

The Freedom Writers

Monday, January 25, 2010 § 3

It's from the heart.
It's from the soul.
It's from "Da ghetto."
The Freedom Writers has made my mind work in ways it has not before. I'm still not finished, actually I'm only halfway through, but the message of this book is overpowering. Teens coming together in the classroom of an English teacher. A war between races; Black, White, Asian, and Latino. An English teacher striving to give teens something to look forward to, some happiness in the midst of despair for many. Literature, love, and hope shaping their lives into something better. The Freedom Writers is truly a book to read. I must admit though, this book is a slow read. It's taken me a couple weeks to get to the middle. Soon I will end it and tell you all about it. Feed off this in the meanwhile.

Genius Idea!

Saturday, January 23, 2010 § 2

I recently came across a blog called Life in Quotations. I truly enjoyed reading this blog so I emailed it's creator, Barry. Barry and I have been talking and he has a really awesome idea. He wants all of us bloggers to get a taste of each others personalities outside of the internet. The idea is of sending a fellow blogger or viewer something, anything, that describes your personality. All the details of how this works and will go down is explained in the following link.

http://life-in-quotations.blogspot.com/2009/12/bloggers-over-borders.html

Please go check it out. It will only take 5 minutes of your time.

Thanks so much!

To see is to not believe

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 § 4

Why are you afraid?
Be who you want to be
Who do you want to impress?
They don't matter
What are you hiding?
It's not worth it
Where do you want to be?
You can achieve it
How?
Believe

Nouvelle vie, Pavement, and Coconut Body Wash

Saturday, January 16, 2010 § 5

I moved to the Dominican Republic
I had no idea what was in store
Sweltering heat, salty water
Stray dogs
Palm trees, broken asphalt
I smelled avocados and rice
Beans and meat
Unbelievable heat
After a long day of traveling
I took a shower with coconut body wash
So relaxing
Craving for an avocado salad, I ate a mango

Here's to new adventures-

Ode to LIFE

Sunday, January 10, 2010 § 0

Colors, colors everywhere I see;
Colors, colors hanging over me.
Lights, lights hanging over me;
Lights, lights everywhere I see.
Music, music filling me inside;
Music, music coming like a tide.
Trees, trees swaying everywhere;
Trees, trees blowing through my hair.
Clouds, clouds please just go away;
Clouds, clouds please don't ruin my day.
Life, life is a complex thing;
Life, life makes me want to sing.

Enjoy every detail of LIFE.

Just Like Me

Wednesday, January 6, 2010 § 2

Black describes me.
My moods, my personality.
Black is a color that everyone likes.
Black is subtle,
Not too flashy, not too boring.
Black is power, authority.
Black moves like air.
Close your eyes, it's everywhere.
Black is nonchalant.
Black's carefree.
Nothing phases this color.
Black's hard as steel.

Black is my best friend.
Because we're just alike,
Plain, basic, understated,
Unlike a red or orange or yellow.
We don't brighten up a room.
We bring a coolness
That can't be produced by another.

Stone-faced is our expression.
Relaxed is our mood,
Our state of mind.
We stand alone,
But we can mix
With all people, all colors

Lawan Mitchell, age 16

This is a poem from the book I am currently reading as you can see on the sidebar. I absolutely love it. The comparisons, the vocabulary, the descriptions are all so entertaining. It is fascinating how a color can say so much; how just a color can mean so much. Sometimes, I feel like I'm in a black mood and it is comforting to see that someone else out there understands exactly how I feel, and could describe my mood better than I possibly can. There are many more interesting poems in this book, but for now I hope you enjoy this one.

A New Beginning

Saturday, January 2, 2010 § 1

My name is long, thus I go by Sophia—which according to a book is French. However, my cultural and ethnic roots take me to the middle of the Caribbean and all the way to the tip of South America.

I have loved literature and reading since I was a little girl. Reading is a way to get away from your own reality and enter someone else's. Poetry, which is the main focus of this blog, has become a recent obsession of mine. Writing poetry gives me a chance to express myself in ways that merely speaking could not. With poetry, nobody can tell me what to write or how to write it because style is invented by the author.

Writing a blog, however, gives the audience a chance to judge me not based on superficial matters but strictly on personality and the content of my writing. This blog will feature book and poem critiques, as well as poems written by me.

Just like a circus, this blog combines different literary styles, critiques, and unexpected ideas and trends.

On the side bar, you will find a list of the latest books I have read, and the book I am currently reading. I will update the list as I continue to read.

I would like to make you a part of my blog. If you love to read or write as much as I do, feel free to share your reading lists, critiques, and poems with me!

Follow me on Twitter or e-mail me at apoetscircus@gmail.com.

Make sure to continue to explore The Coffee Cup—a new way of blogging.
